Amici Pet Hospital offers class IV cold laser therapy, a new innovative alternative for relieving pain, inflammation, and muscle stiffness/spasms. Laser therapy has been in use since the 1970’s and cleared by the FDA in 2002. The laser light (biostimulation) works to increase the cells’ metabolic activity, elevate oxygen & nutrient transportation, and boost cellular energy (ATP) synthesis in the targeted cells/area. The overall effect is an optimal environment that allows for accelerated healing of injured tissue and ultimately returning the function/mobility.
How it works:
Four different light wavelengths work in unison, targeting specific cellular processes and tissue levels :
- Reducing acute pain (analgesic) and inflammation
- Decreasing stiffness, muscle spasms
- Accelerated healing of injuries and surgical sites
- Providing relief from chronic pain
- Possible alternative or adjunctive therapy to pain/anti-inflammatory medication
- Reducing scar tissue formation when healing
Applicable, but not limited to:
- Chronic pain
- Abscess/open wounds
- Post-surgery incisions
- Lameness/tension (due to trauma)
Each laser session will vary depending on individual factors of your pet, including but not limited to: age, health status, diagnosis, and size. Each session will usually last 4-8 minutes per body site, but visit durations may be longer if performed on multiple sites. Pets will usually receive some relief and improved mobility/functionality 12-24 hours following the initial session. Full effects may not be seen until after a couple treatments (cumulative over time). Sedation is usually not required, and no shaving is needed!
